Description

Hahoetal, masks worn to perform satirical characters in Korean traditional plays, undergo lithographic contact printing before being pieced together into a video sequence. Each Hahoetal character has their own gossip, or “Bonchinche," associated with their scene.

In this project, I explore the political dimension of gossip, particularly its gendered aspects. The seemingly frivolous gossips that Hahoetal characters perform offer deeper insight into misogyny, patriarchy, and alienation. Essentially, masking and gossiping become a survival strategy for women in a society.
